About The Four Gates School of Chinese Martial Arts in Patchogue, NY

Meet Michael Evans

Owner and Chief Instructor at
The Four Gates School of Chinese Martial Arts in Patchogue

Like many of a certain age, Sifu Mike got his introduction to the martial arts by watching Kung Fu Theater on TV. At the age of 11, after expressing a desire to learn, Mike's father, a former Marine, began teaching him the basics of Okinawan Karate, which he had learned while serving in the United States Marine Corps. Though the training was rudimentary, at best, it sparked a desire in Sifu Mike's heart to learn martial arts. Unfortunately, the family did not have the money to seek formal training at that time.

At the age of 15, a young Mike Evans was selected by the Rotary Club to serve as a foreign exchange student. While living in Samsun, Turkey, Mike was exposed to both Tae Kwon Do and various grappling arts, including Greco-Roman wrestling and the anything-goes Turkish greased wrestling (yağlı güreş), which originated with the world-renowned Janissaries, an elite fraternity of body guards to the imperial Sultans.

Upon graduating from Eastport High School, Mike followed in the footsteps of his father and enlisted in the Marine Corps, with the hopes of a long career in military intelligence, where he trained in fighting concepts from Tae Kwon Do, Okinawan Karate and LINE (Linear Infighting Neural Override Engagement) Training. Suffering a major setback, however, Mike was medically discharged from the Marine Corps after receiving injuries in the course of training.

Faced with starting life over, and having been told he would always have limited function in his right hand, Mike returned to his dreams for inspiration. Within weeks, he had enrolled at the school that was located across the street from where his father had lived all those years ago: The Shaolin Kung Fu Studios, under the direction of Moises Arocho. It was here, in 1995, after realizing that everything he had done before had only been a search for a school in which he fit, that Mike began his true training in the martial arts. Overcoming his injuries, Mike went on to earn a Black Sash in 1998. In 1999, when his teacher went into retirement, Mike and a senior training brother took over operations of the school.

After proving his dedication to his training, to his system, and to his teacher, Mike was taken by his teacher, Moises Arocho, as a Disciple, and has since gone on to achieve the privilege of having his own students, and the responsibility of the title bestowed upon him: Sifu. His experiences in the martial arts, and his ability to overcome life's challenges, coupled with his degree from the New York College of Health Professions in massage therapy, allow Sifu Mike to bring the best of the old and the new to every class so that his students can overcome their own trials and achieve more than they thought possible.

The Four Gates School of Chinese Martial Arts teaches Northern Lohan Chuan, a traditional style with roots in the Shaolin Temple and the secret societies of the Boxer Rebellion. While we maintain the traditions of our style, classes are taught using modern methods to ensure each student's progression, as well as the effectiveness of the techniques in today's world.

Our Youth Kung Fu program places emphasis on developing the martial skills students will need throughout their course of training while developing the leadership traits that will allow them to become star members of our community as they grow. In addition to effective self defense and fancy martial arts moves, students learn how to create and accomplish goals, how to assess, avoid, and deal with the various types and levels of confrontation, how to take personal responsibility for their success, and how to balance teamwork with personal needs through the setting of healthy boundaries. Students will also be given the tools and social support they need to deal with bullying, an ongoing problem in modern schools and in online communities.

Adult Kung Fu students focus more heavily on the skills needed to defend self and loved ones. Classes focus on increasing physical fitness, awareness, and modern application of the traditional techniques learned through forms play. While we follow a solid curriculum designed to build a solid framework of martial ability, we also leave room for personal development, recognizing that everyone comes to class for their own unique reasons. Through training, students will continually set goals, meet them, and take the step beyond.

Whether a person is looking for self-defense or self-esteem, inner peace or tactical combat skills, history, culture, science, or friendship, The Four Gates School of Chinese Martial Arts stands on its ability to help ordinary people achieve the extraordinary.
